Nail fungus prevention

You can help to reduce risk / prevent toenail fungus by:

  • Wearing comfortable shoes that allow your feet some breathing space, choose shoes that give your toes plenty of room
  • Wearing shoes, sandals or flip-flops in showers and locker rooms
  • Keeping your toenails trimmed
  • Trimming your toenails straight across and leave them slightly longer than the tip of your toe. If you have to round the corners, try not to dig too deep or break the skin because this may cause an infection (a good toenail clipping moment is after a shower or bath, your nails are softer and easier to clip)
  • Drying your feet thoroughly after a shower or bath
  • Hot washing towels, socks, bathmats at a temperature of at least 60C
  • Wearing clean socks or stockings every day
  • Regularly washing the floors where you walk bare foot, carefully clean your shower / bath
If you suspect that you have toenail fungus, you should seek professional treatment. You are advised to see your (foot) doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
